Kate Middleton joins Gen Z in bringing back controversial fashion trend and millennials might not like it

Fashion trends are cyclical, and there's one fashion trend that emerged in the noughties and seemed to disappear.

However, it has made a powerful comeback this year, with Princess Kate at the forefront, alongside a wave of Gen Z who have embraced the skintight silhouette and moved away from baggy jeans and looser fits.

While every denim style, from flares to bootcut, mom jeans, and even barrel and wide leg styles, has had its moment, there's something timeless about the classic skinny jean.

In the noughties, skinny jeans became a wardrobe essential, seen on everyone from Kate Moss to Amy Winehouse. Though they fell out of favor, they're now back in the spotlight and are here to stay.

The Princess of Wales frequently opts for dark denim or black skinny jeans at events, pairing them with classic white sneakers or ballet flats. Fashion journalist Laura Sutcliffe explained to Hello! magazine why Kate has remained loyal to her skinny jean style.

She said: "The Princess of Wales has always championed skinny jeans, even though barrel and turn-up styles are considered more fashionable right now.

"She has paired them with a range of fashion staples over the years; from her Breton striped tops to tailored blazers and pretty blouses."

It seems Kate has found a style she appreciates and has remained committed to it, as she is frequently seen in skinny jeans, including during her recent public appearances now that she has resumed royal duties this year.

Sutcliffe added: "The mother-of-three requires comfort for sporty engagements and the school run. The mighty skinny jeans suit everyone, regardless of body shape."

Kate isn't alone in reviving skinny jeans, as fashion runways have also seen a resurgence of skintight denim. In 2023, brands like Saint Laurent, Gucci, and Prada reintroduced the skinny silhouette, showcasing everything from figure-hugging cigarette pants to tapered leggings. Just a year later, skinny jeans officially made their return, as Miu Miu took it a step further by featuring models in skin-tight denim.

Celebrities have also been spotted returning to skinny jeans, with Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski donning theirs with effortless off-duty model style.

According to Farfetch’s senior menswear editor, Luke Raymond, the skinny jean revival is likely to persist as brands and influencers strive to stand out.

"It’s now rare to see skinny jeans in the wild, which means that brands and influential dressers will inevitably seek to bring them back into the limelight," he told GQ.

"With the nostalgic throwback to the #indiesleaze era of the early ’00s gaining momentum, it's the perfect storm for the return of the skinny jean."
