Influencer slammed for ‘out of touch’ review of Bali holiday after revealing why she fled to Dubai instead

Molly-Mae Hague's elder sister, Zoe Rae, has ignited significant discussion online following her recent vlog about her brief 48-hour stay in Bali, which ended prematurely as she and her husband redirected their trip to Dubai.

Last week (July 13), the 28-year-old influencer posted a video diary documenting her one-year wedding anniversary journey with her husband, Danny, titled: "BALI VLOG | IT DIDN'T GO TO PLAN..."

In the vlog, Zoe shared her observations on the contrast between the portrayal of the country on social media and her personal experience in real life, asserting that the Indonesian island is 'not as influencers depict it'.

Towards the video's conclusion, Zoe reflected on the brief visit, confessing: "Since arriving in Bali, something has just not felt quite right for us.

"We arrived in Bali with high hopes, influenced by social media - seeing everyone enjoying such a wonderful time, beautiful places to dine, stunning beaches, great gyms, and lovely coffee shops.

"If you took a snapshot of the coffee shop and zoomed out, the reality would become apparent. I don’t believe the true essence of Bali is widely depicted."

She continued: "I think this is largely due to influencers and those with large online followings, sharing only the luxurious aspects."

Zoe noted that this wasn’t her first journey to Asia, as she had previously spent five months before joining the army exploring Thailand, Vietnam, China, and Hong Kong.

"I experienced a lot and spent considerable time in these countries. But Bali feels distinctly different," she added.

"We were advised that Uluwatu, where we are now, is one of the top spots to visit, which is why we came here. If this is one of the best, I'm uncertain about the other locations."

Acknowledging the allure of the country, Zoe shared her advice that it might be more suited for backpackers rather than those seeking a stationary holiday.

"I can truly understand the attraction, I can. I think if you're backpacking and want to explore, it’s fantastic," she explained. "For a holiday where you stay in one spot, it might not be ideal.

"But even then, I say it’s great for backpackers, but many have messaged me saying they traveled to various countries and found this to be their least favorite.

"I believe there are many other places where you could have a better experience and more enjoyable time."

Danny then joined the frame, sharing his perspective on the trip: "You either travel to explore and experience culture or you want a getaway to unwind without concerns."

Zoe mentioned they decided to shorten their trip as they 'just wanted to leave', with Danny remarking: "Time is valuable."

"When you know you're not happy, why postpone it? If you can leave today, why not leave today," Zoe concurred.

She ultimately concluded: "We missed the mark, maybe we didn’t do enough research, maybe it’s our own fault. I did a lot of research, though.

"I think it’s just personal preference, and for us, this wasn’t the right fit. We decided to go enjoy our anniversary somewhere we know we love, where we can relax and drink the water without worrying about being ill for a week."

The couple ultimately chose to head to Dubai following their brief Bali visit to conclude their wedding anniversary holiday.

Some viewers fully supported their decision, with one YouTube user commenting: "Happy anniversary to you both, you’ve made the right choice to change locations. You deserve the holiday you wanted, though it’s a shame you didn’t share more of your experience. Hope you have a fantastic time in Dubai."

"Life’s too short to waste time and money on a trip you’re not enjoying, especially on your anniversary, so I completely understand your decision to leave," empathized another.

Others, however, were less understanding.

"It’s a real place, with real culture, real issues, and real people. It’s not going to be picture-perfect like Dubai because it’s not a manufactured concrete jungle made for Instagram and selfies like Dubai is," wrote a third YouTube user.

"It’s a developing country and, to me, that’s what makes it so fascinating. I’d much prefer less glamorous travel with some genuine culture over a fake concrete abyss any day. Not sure what you expected."

Another added: "Bali is a beautiful island, but if you're used to visiting Dubai, it’s nothing like that. There is so much rich culture if you're willing to search for it, embrace it, and step out of your comfort zone, and the people couldn’t do enough for you.

"Dubai is essentially built for wealthy tourists, and if you're not an influencer or don’t have money to spend or get free stuff, you wouldn’t have the same experience there either. Don’t just follow what other influencers do; find your own magical places."

Zoe's YouTube video's description read: "Hey guys!!

"Thanks so much for watching. Unfortunately, Bali wasn't quite the right fit for us for our wedding anniversary! We are incredibly lucky to be able to travel and see such amazing countries, but as Danny said, time is precious and we wanted to relax and enjoy the time together that we don't always get due to Danny's job!"
