Sad new details on helicopter’s final seconds before it crashed into American Airlines plane and killed 67 passengers revealed

New somber details have surfaced about the final moments of a helicopter before it collided with an American Airlines passenger jet.

In January, American Airlines Flight 5342 was involved in a mid-air collision with a United States Army Black Hawk helicopter over Washington, D.C.

The PSA jet, with 60 passengers and four crew members onboard, was making its descent into Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport when it was hit by a Sikorsky H-60 military helicopter carrying three soldiers on a training mission.

The crash tragically resulted in the loss of 67 lives from both aircraft, marking the deadliest aviation disaster in the US since November 12, 2001, when a plane crashed into a neighborhood in New York City.

Recently, new insights have been revealed about the helicopter's fate, including internal recordings.

During a government investigation hearing that began today (30 July), officials were presented with an animation detailing the events leading to the collision.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, which commenced the three-day hearing this week, the American Airlines flight last communicated with air traffic control approximately five minutes prior to its scheduled landing.

Simultaneously, the helicopter, piloted by Captain Rebecca Lobach, along with Chief Warrant Officer 2 Andrew Eaves and Staff Sergeant Ryan O'Hara, was en route to Virginia.

Three minutes before the collision, Eaves was heard instructing Lobach to 'descend for me' as they were at 300 feet.

The Black Hawk helicopter collided with the American Airlines plane at an altitude between 300 and 350 feet - exceeding its authorized flight level by over 100 feet, as indicated by air traffic control radar data.

At the moment of impact, the passenger plane was at 325 feet and had clearance to land - with data revealing that the pilots attempted to ascend just before the collision.

The hearing disclosed that air traffic control issued two warnings to the helicopter about the approaching plane.

The helicopter crew acknowledged seeing the jet and requested a 'visual separation' to maneuver around it.

“Alright, kinda come left for me ma’am, I think that’s why he’s asking,” Eaves told Lobach.

She replied: “Sure.”

Eaves then added: “We’re kinda out towards the middle," to which Lobach said: “Okay, fine.”

Seconds later, at 8:38 pm, the helicopter and jet collided.

Additional details about the incident are anticipated to emerge as the hearing continues this week.
